2nd TCC Roundtable, Dr. Francisco Javier de Alba

2nd TCC Roundtable, Dr. Francisco Javier de Alba

Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, the second TCC Roundtable on the Classical Canon with Dr. Pamela Mireles and Albert Wheeler.

https://www.tccollaboration.com/23-the-classical-canon-tcc-roundtable/

Another successful and substantive roundtable with two fantastic guests. Sometimes it is easy to lose perspective in this sense, but the idea of the Classical Canon in music is often discussed (at least in my immediate circles) and I wonder if it is as fruitful of a discussion for others outside of academia. I would generally say yes, but it was fascinating to engage in this conversion especially when talking about the realities and benefits within pedagogy. Of course we got a bit into the philosophical, but it is sometimes healthy to pull away from the abstract and look at the finite details. Whether you find the construct of the Classical Canon a long-term detriment to inclusion and expansion of musical thought (this is my own perspective) or as having within it the peaks of Western music, with an inherent warrant of study, you will enjoy this fantastic conversation that we had about relevant topics.

A very special thank you again to Dr. Pamela Mireles and Albert Wheeler for coming onto the podcast to discuss The Classical Canon.

I am excited to preview the next episode of the TCC Podcast which will feature Dr. Francisco Javier de Alba and his piece Uncharted. In times of great distress in the world, such as now, a year prior, two years prior, and so on, it can both feel infuriating and overwhelming. In my conversation with Dr. Javier de Alba, we explore a number of these topics and feelings, and how he expresses this cycle of turbulent feelings in the several movements of Uncharted. I can certainly say as someone firmly working his own way through academia, pieces like Uncharted and the accompanying conversations become more and more essential every day. Although a good deal of the conversation, we also explore a number of other things, and I am excited to share it all with you. This is going to be a fascinating and engaging episode, and you won’t want to miss it!

Before closing this blog post, I want to acknowledge the lack of consistent content since the release of the previous episode. As I said in quick posts on Instagram and Facebook almost a week ago, life has been more than a little bit challenging lately. The same week as the release of the last episode, I became quite ill with a normal cold but it really hit me hard. Following recovering, hurricane Helene was making its way towards my place of residence in Tallahassee, Florida. Although I am very fortunate that the worst, or even middling, effects of the storm did not greatly impact my own well-being, the anxiety in the lead-up and preparations was quite overwhelming. Additionally, on Friday September 27th, my immediate family suffered a loss, and for privacy’s sake I will not disclose any further. On top of this, of course, I am a full-time graduate student with a teaching assistantship, so it can be a lot. I apologize for these gaps, and I promise that I am doing my best to keep content on a more regular schedule.

Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, the 2nd TCC Roundtable on The Classical Canon with Dr. Pamela Mireles and Albert Wheeler. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, October 7th for Dr. Francisco Javier de Alba and his piece Uncharted. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!

- Aaron
