Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, featuring the artist Alivia Hunter and her songs Clementine, You wouldn’t believe, and Icarus.

The conversation with Alivia was delightful time and an educational one for myself. I had absolutely no concept of the modern folk scene or how it worked. One of the best parts of this podcast is being able to engage with parts of music that otherwise myself, and I’m sure some listeners, are not aware of. Another part of the conversation that I am particularly thankful for is when we discussed the problematic history of some folk repertoire. I’m sure that this is not an easy discussion to have in some folk circles, and it certainly comes into, at least some, conflict with the idea of historical/cultural preservation. I would agree with Alivia that it is heavily context dependent on how the problematic materials are treated, sometimes it is best to completely omit it, and sometimes it is better to simply have an open discussion about it before performing or even augmenting the lyrical content. I won’t express to be any kind of authority in these circles of discussions, but it seems that Alivia’s approach is both healthy and considerate towards the harmful nature of some lyrics. Separate from this, be looking out on the horizon for some new music from Alivia. I don’t know any further details (I probably wouldn’t share them!), but she is a growing artist with much more in the future for her, music or otherwise.

A very special thank you again to Alivia Hunter for coming onto the podcast and for sharing her songs Clementine, You wouldn’t believe, and Icarus.

I am excited to preview that the next episode of the TCC Podcast be featuring the composer Will Davenport and his piece Concerto for 6 String Electric Violin. That name should look familiar if you have been following the TCC for some time, as this is the third time that Will has been on the podcast! Technically this is his second featured episode, the first one being Ep.3 Reed Quintet I, and he was on the panel for the first TCC Roundtable: Collaboration in Reality (both links available below!). Concerto for 6 String Electric Violin is an important piece in many ways. Will has been working on this piece for the better part of a year, and it is also his composition master’s thesis! For myself, as we will discuss in the episode, it is actually a conversation spurred by this piece that led to the Theorist Composer Collaboration! It was great talking to Will, catching up with him on the podcast and discussing such a landmark piece for his career. Of course I would love to say more, but you all will have to wait until this coming Monday to find out more!

On a personal note, it has been great returning to managing and creating content for the TCC. As I said in my “return” video on social media, the month of November was intense and stressful, but it also yielded some of the academic work that I am most proud of to-date. Engaging with people on social media and taking time to network with various artists from around the globe once again is, although at times stressful, largely cathartic. I am also still deeply appreciative of the people who follow and engage with the content of the TCC, and I hope the content of the coming months continues to improve and satisfy!

Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring Alivia Hunter and three of her songs. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, November 18th, for the episode featuring Will Davenport and his piece Concerto for 6 String Electric Violin. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!

- Aaron
