Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I would highly encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the Theorist Composer Collaboration, featuring the first guest host and theorist on the program, Brittney Pflanz, and the composer Cameron Gwynn alongside his piece Hibernaculum.

I covered this during the outro of the episode, but I am very thankful to Brittney for taking the leap to be the first guest host on the program. It is very important to me to include a variety of perspectives in both the interviewer and interviewee, and I am very happy for this to have come to fruition. Again, as covered in the outro, I originally viewed myself as the primary host of the TCC, but it has developed into being THE host of the TCC. It has still been a great experience, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just that the trajectory of the podcast has slightly changed from what I thought at the beginning. Either way, I look forward to having more guest hosts in the future, even if it is not frequently scheduled.

On a different note, I found the consistent reference to Winnie-The-Pooh from Cameron in his compositional framing quite endearing and enjoyable. Both Brittney and I know Cameron as a colleague at Florida State University, all three of us are in the same year of the master’s in music theory program, and for anyone else who knows Cameron, this definitely speaks to who he is. It’s a whimsical, innocent, and also genuine composition which has a charm that Cameron is often known for in his humor and care. As seen in a recent clip from the episode that was posted to our social media platforms, Cameron also had a light-hearted take and apparent self-awareness in the choice of meter for Hibernaculum, (12/16+15/16!!!). Again, I really appreciate the time, work, and effort of Brittney Pflanz and Cameron Gwynn for coming onto the TCC, and for Cameron sharing his piece Hibernaculum.

I am also happy to preview the next featured composer on the Theorist Composer Collaboration, which will be Ben Williams and his album On My Own. I have known Ben since early high school, and we went through orchestra together in both high school and the community college. Ben was also my first music theory tutor/teacher, and, as you will hear in the episode, I was certainly not the most naturally-inclined student. I don’t want to give too much away here, but Ben and I go deep into music production working in digital audio workstations, his compositional inspirations, and we especially dive into a constructive conversation on the state of academia and music theory.

I would also like to tease that the next featured composer in the following week will be Brian Junttila and his piece Concertino for Saxophone and Chamber Ensemble. More on this with next week’s blog post!

Again, make sure to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring guest host Brittney Pflanz and the composer Cameron Gwynn with Hibernaculum. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and/or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, June 3rd for Ben Williams and his album On My Own. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!

- Aaron
