It was a really fun interview, and I am very grateful for Dr. Gutierrez to come onto the TCC. I know that an easy perception from the episode is that I was absolutely gushing about this piece, which is somewhat true, but it is more-so that I just get really excited about art that inspires me. As featured in the podcast episode, the slower, contrasting middle section of the piece was just pure elation. I am an absolute sucker for thick string-choir orchestration within a larger orchestra, and this section was just something really special. That is not to forget the absolute ear-worm of a melodic motif that is called (as I found out during the recording of the episode) the creation theme, and its different orchestrations and ornamentations throughout the piece. Dr. Gutierrez also has the recording with the score of Teogonia on his website, and I highly recommend you check-out the actual piece. Thank you again to Dr. Nico Gutierrez for bringing his doctoral dissertation piece, Teogonia, onto the TCC, and all of his contact info is included on the corresponding contributor page (link below!).

The next episode of the Theorist Composer Collaboration will be featuring Dr. Michael Kahle, from the University of West Virginia, and his piece We are the stories we’ve been told, a three-movement work for flute, viola and vibraphone. Certainly a unique instrumentation, and it produces quite the novel sound. Now, I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that this piece has a dynamically unique construction in its compositional process. Think Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, and for fear of spoiling the fun, I will leave it at that. Make sure to follow all of our social media platforms and or subscribe to the podcast hosting platform of your choosing (all relevant links at the bottom of this post), and of course new episodes will be immediately uploaded to this website. I had a great time talking with Dr. Kahle and spending time with his work, and you won’t want to miss the upcoming episode this coming Monday, May 13th!
I am also happy to tease that the episode following Dr. Kahle is going to be a little different from the existing library of guests, as the TCC will be featuring Violincia, an alternative post-rock group, and their debut album Nihilara. More on this soon, and I promise it will be very exciting!
Make sure to stay up-to-date with all of the goings-on with the Theorist Composer Collaboration with the following links, and I will see you this coming Monday with the next episode!
