Gabriel Gekoskie, Dr. Nico Gutierrez

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to the weekly blog post and, unlike last week, this one is not gargantuan with multiple subheadings.

If you have not yet listened to it, I encourage you to navigate over to the episode tab to see the most recent episode of the Theorist Composer Collaboration with Gabriel Gekoskie and his piece, Modest Mutilation. A very fun conversation that got quite deep into the technical weeds with granular synthesis. It had been a while since I had spoken to Gabe since our undergraduate degrees at University of Florida, and this was a fun way to reconnect and involve him in a new venture. I would also encourage you, if you haven’t already, to watch the accompanying animation created for Modest Mutilation featured on Gabe’s YouTube channel, created by Durnis Markov. Thank you again for Gabe for coming onto the Theorist Composer Collaboration and sharing his work, Modest Mutilation.

The next episode, released this coming Monday, will be featuring Dr. Nico Gutierrez and his masterful orchestral work, Teogonia. I don’t want to spoil very much, but this was a fun and exciting episode. As I say within the interview, Teogonia is legitimately one of the best orchestral pieces I have heard in a long time. It is also certainly an honor to be discussing the piece that was used as his doctoral dissertation! We discuss Dr. Gutierrez’s career, background, the inspiration of Teogonia, how it is constructed, and the status of the fields of music theory and composition. You are really not going to want to miss this, so make sure you are following our social media accounts and subscribed on the podcast streaming platform of your choice. Mark you calendar for this Monday, May 6th, for Dr. Nico Gutierrez and Teogonia!

If there are any composers wishing to be featured here on the TCC podcast, please feel free to reach out! Whether that’s through our contact page or over social media, I would love to meet with you and discuss possibly being featured on the show.

The spring academic semester is finally over, and I am excited to produce content over this summer break and the following year. I can share that the next guest after Dr. Gutierrez will be Dr. Michael Khale and his piece We are the stories we’ve been told. After this, although it is not yet fully confirmed with the timeline of releases and availability, will include the first guest music theorist host, and separately, an artist outside of the academic zeitgeist. Exciting things to come, but I don’t want to spoil anything until these plans are confirmed. Make sure to check out the previous episode, and make sure to watch the next this coming Monday. Thank you for reading, and I’ll see you later on the Theorist Composer Collaboration.

- Aaron
