Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, featuring the composer Jane Kozhevnikova and her piece Remember Me Then.

It was a great time talking to Jane, exploring the twists and turns of her personal story and, as discussed in the episode, Jane’s triumphs over adversity should be an inspiration to anyone listening. I also really loved diving into some intricate elements of poetry and text setting, something that I am really not familiar with. In extension of that, one interesting thing that Jane brought up in the last portion of the episode was the apparent bias against vocal works in the modern composition field. As someone on the outside looking in, and someone who does not practice composition, this was quite surprising and intriguing to think about. I will say, vocal works have not made up a significant portion of pieces at new music concerts, and, further than there not being many composition professors who are vocalists, the reasons behind such bias would be interesting to explore. Although I am not aware of such things personally, Jane’s travels and life experience leads me to think that there is merit to it, and I think this is one of the many important reasons to have someone with more life experience on the podcast. Although it is great and fun to have completely fresh faces on the podcast, it is also an absolute treat to have someone who has been around a little and can speak personal truth to the issues consistent on this program.

Thank you again to Jane Kozhevnikova for coming onto the podcast and for sharing her piece Remember Me Then.

I am excited to preview the next episode of the TCC Podcast which will feature the composer Daniel Townsend, Ph.D. and his piece The Vibration of Ancient Incarnations. My conversation with Dr. Townsend comes at a major point of his career, that being, he just completed his Ph.D. in Composition at University of Florida! This episode will be diving into a large amount of both complex and controversial topics in the world of modern composition. Dr. Townsend was very gracious and open to discussion such topics and, although I don’t want to spoil the fun, we discuss the issues of avant-garde accessibility and the question of considering an audience’s perspective in art. The Vibration of Ancient Incarnations is a piece very much unlike anything else that has been on this program so far, and is an element of contemporary music that I am excited to explore and platform on this podcast. I want to give more snippets about the various subjects of the episode, but that would spoil the excitement! You all will have to wait for the release of the next episode this coming Monday. You certainly won’t want to miss it!

I am also excited to tease that the next guest after Dr. Townsend is the composer Youngsun Kim and a collection of electronic works, and if that is vague, it is intentional, but that is part of the fun! More on this in next week’s blog post!

Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring the composer Jane Kozhevnikova and her piece Remember Me Then. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and/or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, August 5th for Dr. Daniel Townsend and his piece The Vibrations of Ancient Incarnations. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!
