My conversation with Katherine was a delightful time discussing the beautiful, dynamic landscapes of the state of Minnesota. Learning about a place you have never visited in the form of atmospheric music is always magical. It is also special to think of a place/environment that, although in concept not too foreign, can be just as enchanting as anything else. For example, there are many numbers of pieces that emulate Antarctica. It is, in popular conception, barren, daunting, and foreign in most ways. It is, and for the majority of us will remain forever, a personal mystery. It is fascinating, in this case with Katherine’s piece, how you can achieve similar wonder with a landscape that is, in relative terms, not that far away. I’m not calling Minnesota barren, of course, more that there is so much unperceived beauty, mystery, and wonder in places not too far from where we all stand.
A very special thank you again to Katherine for coming onto the podcast and for sharing her piece, Land of Cloud-Tinted Water.
I am excited to preview the next episode of the TCC Podcast which will be the 3rd TCC Roundtable discussing Women in Composition, featuring two TCC alumni, Ky Nam Nguyen and Mary Denney. On this roundtable, we will be discussing historical and current challenges in being within the field of composition/academia as a woman. As anyone who knows me, even just in passing, I am not/do not identify as a woman, (nor am I a composer), so this is a topic that is certainly outside of my depth. Although outside of my area of experience, I find it important to platform such issues and give opportunity to two young, already highly accomplished, female composers who are working their way through the field to speak about their experiences. Now, this might be hard to believe, especially if you know me, but I fully anticipate to not give very much opinion/input in this episode, taking on more of a moderating role. My experiences in music are surely full of gender and racial privilege, and I am also sure that I do not fully understand the extent of such privilege beyond what I am currently perceiving. As mentioned earlier, both of the panelists are already accomplished composers who have both been on their own episode features on the TCC (links to each below this paragraph), and I am excited have them back on. I want to give more detail about the general points we are going to discuss, but that would be giving away too much of the fun! This is going to be an important and insightful episode; you won’t want to miss it!
