Professor Táhirih Motazedian, 1 Year Anniversary Episode

Professor Táhirih Motazedian, 1 Year Anniversary Episode

Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, featuring the music theorist Professor Táhirih Motazedian alongside her book Key Constellations: Interpreting Tonality in Film.

This was a wonderful episode and conversation. I have always thought about how to further represent the theory side of the Theorist Composer Collaboration, and this was a great way to start that. Her perspectives on the past/future of the music theory field were particularly interesting, especially with the possibility of an AI interest group. My own opinions on AI are mixed, and I am sure that the same sentiment is in the majority, if not negative being the majority within the arts. I also agree with Professor Motazedian that the future of the music theory filed, maybe specifically the SMT, is a bright one. The number of platformed and legitimized forms of analysis have delightfully ballooned over recent years. Most especially at this previous SMT conference, there was such a wide number of possible sessions and methodologies to interact with. At the time I was at a presentation on punk music, the math and music interest group was meeting nearby. Although maybe not exact according to the actual schedule, you get the point. There is a wealth of energy and intellectual diversity within music theory, something that will hopefully continue to expand.

A very special thank you, again, to Professor Motazedian for coming back onto the podcast and for sharing her book Key Constellations.

Well, we are finally here, the one-year anniversary of the Theorist Composer Collaboration!!!

On April 12th, 2024, the first episode featuring Justine de Saint Mars and Oceans Blooming premiered on the website, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. So much has changed and developed since then. For one, I have gotten better at audio editing and now have a far better microphone. Some smaller changes include a more standardized episode format, having an actual introduction instead of just playing the featured music at the beginning. That’s not to mention the social media posts, which have evolved and tweaked over the past year. There has been such a wide range of artists and creatives on the show, everything from tenured composition professors, alt/indie rock solo artist, to Avant Garde vocal music, the span of works represented on the show is something that I am very proud of.

So, all that being said, in two days, this Saturday there will be a short solo episode celebrating the past year of content. On this episode, however, there will be a very special surprise that has been in the works for a couple months. A special “collaboration” if you will that will permanently improve the podcast and listening experience. No it is not a new editing style, software or recording equipment, something a bit more special than that. You just will have to wait a little bit longer to find out!

Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring Professor Táhirih Motazedian. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and or streaming subscriptions to this coming Saturday, April 12th, for the 1 year anniversary episode and the big reveal. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!

- Aaron
