Hello Everyone,
If you have not already, I encourage you to use the following link to listen to the most recent episode of the TCC Podcast, a TCC Roundtable on Women in Composition with composers Mary Denney and Ky Nam Nguyen.

This was a great conversation to be part of, to hear the experiences of Ky Nam and Mary was a great privilege. I also am happy that I took a step back in the conversation, which for me can sometimes be difficult, especially considering how many podcast episodes I have hosted at this point. With topics such as these, ones that I have absolutely no experience in, it’s better to let the more helpful and knowledgeable minds speak. I want to host such conversation about diversity, equitability and inclusion, and I also don’t want to be an unhelpful presence in such places, as I do not have much life experience in it. As Mary said in the episode, sometimes it’s just better if the men take a step back. In the future I am sure there will be another roundtable on Women in Composition. There are even more subtopics and issues available that we didn’t get to, and it’s healthy to keep topics like this an ongoing conversation.
A very special thank you again to Mary Denney and Ky Nam Nguyen for coming onto the podcast and for discussing their experiences as Women in Composition.
I am excited to preview that the next episode of the TCC Podcast be featuring the artist Alivia Hunter and three of her songs, Clementine, You wouldn’t believe, and Icarus. It has been a while since I have had on a non-academia-based composer onto the show, and it is well overdue. Alivia sings and writes in a traditional folk style, and it is very different from some of the music I have had on, even in the commercial music sphere. I am excited to talk to her about the writing process, what helps what, and how best to go about different ideas. This is especially the case since I teach The Art of Songwriting class at Florida State, and these are elements that I think about (and have to teach!) all the time. We are also going to touch on topics of industry, writing process, the folk scene and I am sure much, much more.
As a mild announcement, after the episode with Alivia is posted, there is going to be a two-week gap before the next episode. This is primarily because at that time my Ph.D. applications are due, and I really am going to need the extra time to focus on them. I will do my best to keep up with social media content, but my schedule is going to be very shaky during that time. But don’t worry, things will, very hopefully, be normal after that point in terms of content release.
Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, the TCC Roundtable on Women in Composition with Ky Nam Nguyen and Mary Denney. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, November 18th, for the episode featuring Alivia Hunter. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!
