Hello Everyone,

If you have not already, please go and checkout the latest episode of the Theorist Composer Collaboration podcast featuring Lucy from the group Violincia, and their debut album Nihilara. You can use the link right below to listen to it here on our website, or use any of the attached external streaming links:

Featuring Violincia and their album Nihilara was a great time, and I am more than happy to expand the frame of musical inclusions in the catalogue of features for this podcast. To be very honest, the kind of music (post/alt-rock) that Violincia is part of is not something than I am readily familiar with. It was a great experience to, despite this, find all of the wonders within the tracks and in the album as a conceptual entity. Lucy was also the first person that I didn’t know before creating this podcast that I “cold-called” over social media into getting involved with the TCC. That was definitely something that I was not comfortable with at the time (it just feels weird to ask “random” people for such things!), but I am very happy with how it all paid-off. I knew after discovering their music through both the artwork and listening through the album a couple of times that it would make for a great conversation, and it certainly did. Music, such as this, that is outside of academic framing or conception, is something that I feel should have as much of a place in the TCC as any symphony, trio, or soundscape. I already have a fair number of composers booked for future episodes that would fall into the “commercial music” generalization, as well as in the more traditional notational-based sphere, and I am excited to further expand the community of music makers and analysts within the TCC. Thank you again to Lucy from the group Violincia for joining the program, and for sharing their debut album, Nihilara.

I am extra excited to announce that the next episode of the TCC will not be hosted by me! That’s not because I am tired of it, but because we finally have our first guest music theorist and host joining the program, Brittney Pflanz! Brittney will be talking with the composer Cameron Gywnn to discuss his piece Hibernaculum, as well as Cameron’s background and other theoretical/compositional topics. As a preview of the episode, Brittney wrote a brief introduction for this blog post:

Hi everyone! My name is Brittney Pflanz, and I will be your host for the next episode of the TCC featuring composer and theorist Cameron Gwynn! Like Cameron, I’m a current graduate student at FSU for music theory. I completed my undergraduate degree in theory at Stetson University (Go Hats!) and some of my research interests include music in multi-media, narrative, and embodiment. As a percussionist, I love pieces with diverse timbres and enjoy analyzing the performance aspect of music—which is why it was such a treat to be interviewing Cameron about his piece, Hibernaculum, for next week’s episode! I had such a great time discussing some of the timbral qualities of the piece, as well as learning about some of Cameron’s views on composition and theory. I hope you all enjoy listening to Hibernaculum this coming Monday!

-Brittney

I am so thrilled to have Brittney on as a guest host for the TCC, and it is certainly overdue for there to be another person conducting the show. It was my original intention for it to be something that happened often, and for myself to be the primary host, not THE host, but things don’t always happen as you expect. Regardless, and without spoiling anything, Hibernaculum is a great work with some fascinating elements, and the conversation that Brittney had with Cameron was a delightful one, and you won’t want to miss it.

As a small preview, the next guest after Cameron will be my good friend Ben Williams and his album On My Own, and, without giving anything away, we definitely went deep on the philosophical side of the conversation. There will be more of a preview on the next blog post about this upcoming episode.

Again, make sure to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring Violinica’s album Nihilara. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and/or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, May 27th for our first guest host Brittney Pflanz’s interview with Cameron Gywnn and his piece Hibernaculum, we’ll see you there!
