I really enjoyed having Will back onto the podcast to talk about this milestone piece in his career, as well as in the initial creation of the TCC. Having someone back onto the podcast is always a great time and creates a different dynamic than the typical orientation. Specifically, with Will it was fascinating to look back on his time since being on the program through the lens of Concerto for 6 String Electric Violin, as this piece has been tied to him for over a year. “Long piece jail”, as Will described it in the episode. Something I have been meditating with from the discussion that we had in the last third of the episode, talking about our reflections on how to utilize the resource of music graduate school. Possibly it is my own fault for skewed perception, or maybe even the way the undergraduate programs and society frame graduate study, but as I said in the episode, I was not quite ready for what graduate school really meant. I knew that the piece of paper declaring a graduate degree in music theory was not going to bring copious opportunities in of itself, but I did not realize how powerful research specialization would be. Thankfully, at this point where I am applying to higher programs and conferences, I understand what I want to do, but graduate study really is a Catch-22. Graduate study, in this context at least, is mostly to find greater experience and knowledge in the field to develop your specialization, but if you are already specialized then you get a lot out of it. If you stumble in your journey to specialization, like I have many times, then you get less out of it, but that is also the point of the degree, but yet you end up hindering yourself??? I do not have a fully formed opinion, to be honest, and I’m sure that will come with time. As Will said in the episode, however, always value the amazing people around you. Both Will and I agree that one of, if not the most, powerful parts of being in a graduate program is the opportunity to meet and collaborate with burgeoning professionals in your field, and that certainly has been the case for both of us at FSU.
A very special thank you again to Will Davenport for coming back onto the podcast and for sharing his piece Concerto for 6 String Electric Violin.
I am excited to preview that the next episode of the TCC Podcast be featuring the composer Quinn Mason and his piece A Joyous Trilogy. I am excited to revisit the world of orchestra, and this piece is certainly a great way to do so. A Joyous Trilogy is a heartwarming and, in ways I am not sure on how to quantify, nostalgic piece of music that I am excited to show on the TCC. I am also excited to talk to Quinn both about his music and career paths/success, something that is certainly unique. I would love to share more but unfortunately that would be giving away some of the fun! Make sure to check it out this coming Monday!
Again, don’t forget to listen to the most previous episode if you missed it, featuring the composer Will Davenport. Make sure to follow our social media links below and the podcast streaming platform of your choice to keep up-to-date on new episodes and blog posts from the TCC. Additionally, set your calendar and or streaming subscriptions to this coming Monday, January 6th, for the episode featuring Quinn Mason and his piece A Joyous Trilogy. You won’t want to miss it, and we’ll see you there!
